Poo. Everyone does it and I agree some are better at it than others.

Some talk about it a lot, others are embarrassed about it and then there are some that suffer in silence.


Now I can talk about poo all day long and that’s just as well really.


Let me introduce myself. I’m Diane, Colonic Therapist at Sue Shields Spa in Carnforth and at the Natural Health Centre, Ulverston.







I’ve been having colonics myself for over 25 years and have been practicing as a therapist since 2004.

I have treated literally thousands of clients and learn so much from each and every one – and still do to this day.


I often get asked what made me get into colonics in the first place. Simple – it helped me, I know it works and the satisfaction I get from helping my clients improve their own health is so rewarding and makes it all worthwhile.


Colonic irrigation is the introduction of warm purified water into the large intestine/colon/bowel via the rectum to soften, loosen and release faecal waste, gas and any other nasties hanging about!


The treatment itself, with the water, normally lasts anything from 30 to 60 minutes depending on your comfort and what’s coming out when.


Colonic irrigation can help with many digestive issues, such as constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, bloating, gas, etc.


Likewise, you don’t have to have a complaint as such to benefit from the many positives experienced from having a treatment – a sense of feeling lighter, cleaner, fresher, empty, less bloated around the middle, improving overall digestion and well-being.


In clinic recently, especially with the lead up to the second lockdown, I have noticed an increase in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) type of complaints.

Even many of my regular clients were mentioning excess bloating, excessive wind, constipation or having to dash to the toilet. There were, and probably still are, a lot of stressed out bellies!


Now I’m not saying that all IBS is a result of stress and anxiety but from my experience over the years and especially these past few months, it certainly plays a big part. Our bowels are very responsive to stresses and anxieties.


IBS is a huge umbrella of symptoms and quite often your GP will diagnose you with IBS as there is no medical condition as such to explain your individual symptoms.


I say 'individual' because we are all different.

Typical IBS complaints include - indigestion, reflux, bloating, excess wind, constipation and/or diarrhoea, urgent bowel movements and cramping.


You may suffer with all of the above or just one or two. It can come on very quickly or over a few days.

There is definitely a strong link between your gut and brain. The gut is known to be called the Second Brain (check out the book 'The Second Brain' by Michael Gershon) and where do the sayings 'gut feeling', 'gut instinct' and 'butterflies in your stomach' come from?


There has to be a link between our emotions and our bowels and your emotions will have an impact on your digestive health. It may not rear its ugly head straight away and maybe not at all, but just be aware.


If you are feeling bloated, uncomfortable or suffering with your own bowel movements – don’t suffer in silence. I am more than happy to chat with you and to give you individual advice.

Khaalisa Adam has joined The Consult Centre

Khaalisa is joining us as an apprentice and will be starting with the team on Monday.


We can't wait for her to join us so we asked her to introduce herself to you all!


Khaalisa said: "I'm so happy that The Consult Centre chose me!


"A level media studies introduced me to digital marketing and web design, so I always knew I wanted a creative role.


"After finding a vacancy and researching The Consult Centre through their website, blog and social media, it became evident that they were the best in training me as an apprentice in the industry I wanted to get into.

"I also love their ethos and welcoming, family-like team!"

Khaalisa is from Lancaster, and went to Central Lancaster High, then later sixth form at Ripley St Thomas.


She loves baking - especially desserts and bread (or dessert breads!), loves photography (mostly nature and food) and when she's not babysitting her younger siblings, she likes to watch Prison Break on TV - saying it's the only show she can watch repeatedly without getting bored!


Khaalisa is looking forward to getting started at The Consult Centre and has a busy schedule of training ahead of her, starting next week.

Her induction will include Zoom calls with the other members of the team to pick their brains on everything from how to book room hire appointments for clients, to how to craft the perfect social media post!


From our chats with her already, it's clear she's going to settle in quickly and be a fantastic addition to our team.

Let's face it, we all need a good laugh right now.


So in these troubled times, it's little wonder that funny social media posts, photos, GIFs and memes are the ones going viral.


Who didn't laugh out loud at the hilarious local parish council meeting which turned Jackie Weaver and the catchphrase "You have no authority here!" into an overnight sensation?

We're not saying that these posts were exactly the best for enhancing the business reputations of the people involved! But they are definitely an example of what floats our boat as social media consumers.


We all like a good giggle, and the weird, wacky and witty of the world can definitely lift our spirits.

The law and local government aren't always seen as the most light-hearted of professions. And you too may think your own business social media isn't the right place for joking around. But that's absolutely not the case, if you do it right.


A Monday morning post with a funny gag or a silly meme will raise more of a reaction from your audience than a stuffy sales pitch. It will also show your customers that you're human.

If you can find a Monday post with a cute baby in it as well, then you could be on to a winner.

Not that this will work for everyone. You need to find the right kind of humour to suit the persona of your business.

For example, the above post can work wonders if you run a pub.


But if you're in the corporate world with a packed Monday full of meetings with clients, this kind of post is best avoided!


There are other pitfalls to watch out for when using humour for business social media. While being funny can lead to more likes, shares, and comments, it can also backfire.


Think before you post!

Avoid trying to be witty about:


Politics

Religion

Sex

Race

Tragedy


And don't ever ridicule any group of people - ESPECIALLY clients.


In fact, funny posts containing strong opinions on just about anything need careful thought. There will always be somebody who disagrees with you, and they could be a valued client or a potential customer.


Your business social media page might not be the best place to make fun of your favourite football team's biggest rival, for example - as you will immediately turn off everybody who supports that club!

But don't go overboard (unlike the giant fish). There is such a thing as overdoing the funny posts. Don't neglect the promotion of your business at the expense of being comical all the time - a good mix of content is key.

So when used correctly, humour can be a fantastic social media tool for your business. But it can also go wrong. It's always best to run a funny idea past a colleague before posting.

When it goes spectacularly right, you can do hilarious things like stick baked beans on your Weetabix, and you can get...
